Message say that to worry about downshifting and the supposed damage it does to a car when driven sanely and downshifting while braking is like worrying about the harmful effects that cigarette smoke has on your lungs and throat when puffing away before the firing squad.

Like I said normal downshifting should not be causing any wear that the car cannot withstand LONG LONG before other stuff puts it out of commission. Obviously downshifting on a hill is the proper way to drive for safety's sake, coasting in neutral is retarded in that situation. But to suggest that coasting in neutral under normal driving conditions is the proper way to drive, is not true.

Not meant to be a low blow or anything personal, but the ONLY people I have seen who drive that way were all women. And the increased wear on their brakes was the LEAST of my concerns each time.
